The Calm Before Harvest

At least we hope it's calm this year! Time to start preparing your crush pad and getting your equipment dusted off, cleaned and sanitized.  NEVER use bleach in the winery, that can lead to cork taint and ruin your wine - for sanitation use a 10% solution of Potassium Metabisulfite, Star San, or we prefer Easy Clean, which both cleans and sanitizes. Rinse with your sanitizing solution, and that is your last rinse - don't rinse off.
We have several great books available to guide you in your winemaking, our favorites include "The Backyard Vintner" and "The Way to Make Wine."  We also have quick-reference guides for both White Wine and Red Wine Making available on our website.  And of course we are always available for any questions live in person!
Curds and Wine will close early at 2 pm on Saturday August 3rd, CLOSED Sunday August 4th as well as Wednesday August 28th, Thursday August 29th, and Sunday September 1st

Harvest Equipment for Sale - Limited Inventory!

We have a very limited selection of large equipment for sale, including motorized crusher/destemmers and stands (sold separately), basket or bladder presses, and stainless steel tanks - including a few 100 liter tanks and one larger 290 liter tank. We also have a few 5-spout gravity bottle fillers. 
We will not be able to get more large equipment until next June!  Contact us to check availability.

Equipment Rentals and Harvest Supplies

Curds and Wine is here to help guide you in choosing the best yeasts for your fermentations, and we offer a wide variety of other ingredients from basic nutrients to enhancing enzyme preparations to make the best wines. We also have equipment for rent to crush and press your grape wines - contact us to reserve your equipment as soon as you estimate you will need it.  We offer some basic in-house wine chemistry testing, but for more in-depth analysis our friends at Vinmetrica   offer a wider array of tests - you can drop off your samples for Vinmetrica analyses at Curds and Wine.  Curds and Wine has compiled a red wine making summary and basic shopping list to help you find everything you need for your fermentations.

Fresh Grape Delivery by West Coast Grapes

We will once again be a pick-up point for fresh grapes from West Coast Grapes. Pricing and availability should be online later this month or by early September; sign up for their email list to get notified when information goes online.  Once the delivery date is set we will post it on our Facebook page and on our home page under "Recent Updates".  We anticipate delivery will probably be in October this year, but we won't know until we know!

Grapes are purchased directly  through  West Coast Grapes, we are a pick-up point only, no sales on site for these grapes! Please note, we cannot store these grapes, they will start spontaneously fermenting if you do not pick them up the day they arrive. You will NOT be called to be reminded to pick up your grapes, mark your calendars as soon as the date is set.  If you cannot pick up your grapes on delivery day have them delivered to San Diego Cold Storage (downtown) instead, that will be one of the delivery options on check out.  We do not appreciate being yelled at because YOU forgot to pick up your grapes.


Grapes are unloaded from the refrigerated trucks and stacked next to the order slips at the back North parking lot behind Curds and Wine.  We cannot give a specific time as orders will be pulled from the truck as they were loaded, but the truck should have most orders unloaded by 11 am - please plan to spend a few hours as it takes time to unload the grapes from the truck.  Be sure to pick up your grapes before 4 pm that day.  Your patience and cooperation in getting all the orders out before grapes are taken is appreciated!


We are NOT crushing and destemming grapes on site this year!  If you need to rent a crusher/destemmer we only have 4 total for rent (2 manual and 2 motorized), contact us to reserve one if you need it as soon as possible after the delivery date is set.  We will take reservations based on the time stamps of the email requests we receive, we cannot make a waiting list before the delivery date is set.
